Return to Running: The Race

The Waynesville 10-miler was a great event! I had a blast running side by side with several of my colleagues here at SMSMPT. I had two basic goals on race day: finish the race without injury and finish under 1 hour 30 minutes. Both goals were
achieved thanks to Ben’s guidance and my compliance with his training program.
I was mildly nervous on the day of the race but felt a sense of calm settle over me in the moments leading up to the start. The race started with a steep climb up from Frog Level to Main Street Waynesville… not much of a warm-up! Quickly, the racers fell into their groove, and I was quite happy to have Emily and Brittany to run with as we set a similar pace. Brittany was recovering from a respiratory illness and considered cancelling her race. It was quite inspiring to see her push herself despite not feeling well. I was pleased that my knee held up great on the long downhill to the finish line.
The whole journey of setting a goal to run a race, planning a training program, following through on the program and finally completing the goal has been an excellent experience. It was enlightening to be the “patient” on the other side of a physical therapy plan of care. I highly recommend consulting with Ben regarding any running related needs. He is an excellent resource to have available whether you are a brand new runner looking for “where to start” or a seasoned veteran trying to set a new PR!
